SUMMARY:International Workers’ Memorial Day 28 April 2026
DESCRIPTION:This year International Workers’ Memorial Day (IWMD) will not only commemorate those who have been tragically lost or injured due to work but also highlight the psycho-social risks to workers as work pressures pile up. \nThe mental health risks to workers is more apparent than ever with the rise of new technologies\, surveillance\, algorithms\, insecure work\, wages not keeping up with living costs\, climate change\, pollution and workplace discrimination/ harassment. The impact on workers and their families as well as the economy is staggering. The TUC\, International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and most unions are promoting awareness of worker mental health throughout the year to encourage employers to take it seriously through preventive measures. \nEach year Greater Manchester Hazards Centre organises the event in Central Manchester with the support of local trade unions\, families and workers who have been affected. The event comprises of readings\, music\, a few keynote speakers\, a short street play on the theme\, wreath laying and a minutes silence to acknowledge those who we have lost. Afterwards we move to the Central Library cafe which is a short walk away. There will also be an IWMD display by GMHC at the People’s History Museum during that week (note: the museum is closed on Tuesdays) \nRead more or share information about International Workers’ Memorial Day on our GMHC leaflet.
